The Best Anti-Ageing Product Isn't What You Think…

Best Anti-Ageing Product

What's the best anti-ageing product I can buy?

It may surprise you, but my answer isn't an expensive serum.

It's SPF.

Retinol, vitamin C and peptides can all help improve the appearance of your skin, but if we're not protecting it from daily UV exposure, we're fighting a losing battle.

Ultraviolet (UV) exposure is considered one of the biggest contributors to premature skin ageing, including pigmentation, fine lines, wrinkles and loss of firmness.

Why SPF Comes First

Summer is wonderful for our wellbeing but it can also be one of the hardest seasons for our skin.

We naturally spend more time outdoors, drive with the sun on our face, sit in the garden, walk the dog and enjoy holidays. All those little moments of UV exposure add up over the years.

So this month I thought I'd answer one of the questions I'm asked most often...

☀️ Skin Fact

Up to 80% of visible facial skin ageing is thought to be caused by cumulative UV exposure rather than the natural ageing process alone.

UVA vs UVB – What's the Difference?

UVA – The Ageing Rays

UVA rays penetrate deeply into the skin where they contribute to collagen breakdown, wrinkles, pigmentation and loss of elasticity.

They're present throughout the year, even on cloudy days and can pass through window glass.

UVB – The Burning Rays

UVB rays mainly affect the surface of the skin and are responsible for sunburn and can damage skin cells.

This is why a good sunscreen should always provide broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB.

Which Type of Sun Protection Is Best?

Mineral Sunscreens

Mineral filters, including titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, help protect the skin from UV rays.

Pros

  • Often well tolerated by sensitive skin

  • Great after professional treatments

  • Begin working immediately

Things to consider

  • Some formulations can feel heavier

  • May leave a slight white cast

Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical filters absorb UV energy before it can damage the skin.

Pros

  • Lightweight

  • Easy to wear every day

  • Sits beautifully under make-up

Things to consider

  • Some very sensitive skins may prefer mineral formulations

Don't Forget Physical Protection

Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, seeking shade and UV-protective clothing all play an important role in protecting your skin.

Can We Reverse Sun Damage?

Although we can't completely reverse years of accumulated sun damage, the appearance of photoaged skin can often be significantly improved.

Ingredients such as retinol, vitamin C and peptides, together with professional treatments, may help:

  • Support collagen production

  • Improve skin texture

  • Soften the appearance of fine lines

  • Brighten uneven pigmentation

  • Improve hydration

  • Enhance skin firmness

The key is simple:

Protect your skin while supporting its natural repair processes.

💛 Vicky's Favourite SPF

The CLINICCARE Dermo Corrective SPF50 Cream is much more than a sunscreen.

It works as a:

  • Broad-spectrum SPF 50

  • Moisturising day cream

  • Primer

  • Light complexion corrector

  • Post-treatment recovery cream

It combines mineral and chemical UV filters with niacinamide, stable vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, zinc and antioxidants to help protect the skin while supporting hydration and improving the appearance of uneven skin tone.

Every client having hydrodermabrasion, dermaplaning, skin peels or microneedling leaves my clinic with a sachet of this cream. After investing in your skin, protecting it is one of the most important things you can do.

Its self-adjusting pigments also provide a lovely natural glow, making it ideal for everyday wear, even on sensitive skin.

🌙 Vicky's Favourite Night Cream

For evening skin renewal, my personal go-to is the CLINICCARE Retinol Renewal Cream.

I've tried lots of skincare over the years, but I keep coming back to this one. My skin is quite sensitive, so I love that it isn't heavy or greasy, has a light, fresh fragrance and, thanks to its 0.3% encapsulated (slow-release) retinol, my skin tolerates it really well.

The slow-release technology allows the retinol to be released gradually into the skin, helping to reduce the irritation sometimes associated with traditional retinol products.

Combined with plant-derived squalane, antioxidants and soothing botanical extracts, it helps improve the appearance of:

  • Fine lines

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Dullness

  • Skin texture

while supporting healthier-looking, more radiant skin.

Remember to wear your SPF every day when using retinol.
